Adelaide’s Mawson Lakes community has become on of the first in South Australia to receive EnviroDevelopment Certification, recognising its commitment and contribution to sustainability in residential property developments.
An initiative of the Urban Development Institute of Australia, EnviroDevelopment is a scientifically-based branding and certification system rewarding exemplary sustainable development projects with environment marketing symbols relevant to their achievements
Begun in 1997, Mawson Lakes is a $1.5 billion community on a 620ha site which will be home to more than 10,000 residents, 7,500 students and 7,000 workers by 2011.
Mawson Lakes Project Director Vince Rigter said he welcomed the accreditation because it would help home buyers make informed decisions.
“Creating a world leading sustainable project has always been a driving force behind Mawson Lakes from day one. This means creating a more sustainable place in which to live, learn, work and play today, while ensuring the needs of future generations, and improving our existing quality of life,” he said.
“Mawson Lakes is a multi-award winning community which seamlessly incorporates a wide range of innovative sustainability measures into its design to achieve world-leading outcomes, particularly in the areas of water resource management, building energy efficiency and sustainable development.
“The EnviroDevelopment approach provides a consistent form of national assessment to gauge a project on its sustainability performance and will therefore help facilitate informed decisions from home owners and occupiers to further enhance sustainability in our communities.
To qualify for the accreditation, Mawson Lakes supplied specific details on key sustainability criteria.
“This accreditation is a valuable tool for understanding the sustainability credentials of a community by summarising initiatives into a single document under defined headings. Importantly, it will help home buyers understand sustainability in action by providing a standardised approach to measuring sustainability of developments.”
Mawson Lakes is being developed by Delfin Lend Lease and Land Management Corporation. Delfin Lend Lease is Australia’s leading developer of masterplanned communities with 25 projects across the country.
