Mawson Lakes celebrates cultural diversity with free festival

Henna tattoos, Scottish kilts, Mexican sombreros and exotic fabrics will be all the rage next weekend when Mawson Lakes celebrates cultural diversity with a free family festival, Harmony Day.

On Saturday 21 March from 11am to 3pm, Mawson Lakes’ Harmony Day at The Mawson Centre (2 – 8 Main Street, Mawson Lakes) will feature music and dance performances, children’s storytelling, international cuisine, cultural demonstrations, and craft and jewellery stalls.

Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge will launch the event and introduce Adelaide’s emerging Indian music sensation Gurdeepak who will perform songs from his debut album "Satrangi".

Mawson Lakes Project Director Vince Rigter said Harmony Day was organised to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity and promote understanding.

“Mawson Lakes is proud to be home to a number of students and residents from different cultural backgrounds, so activities like this help to get all members of the community out and interacting with each other,” he said.

“Harmony Day is about celebrating our multicultural society and ensuring everyone, no matter what race or religion, have a sense of belonging and respect.”

Harmony Day will feature an international menu from the Aussie sausage sizzle to Indian curries. The event will feature entertainment from local young rock band The Duran Family as well as Dutch, Mexican, Brazilian, Indian and belly dancing demonstrations.

Festival goers will also enjoy an Indian fashion parade, yoga, tai chi and tae kwando demonstrations, cooking demonstrations, markets, wine tasting and children’s activities.

Mawson Lakes’ Harmony Day was organised by the Mawson Centre Over 50s Group, and is proudly supported by the Australian Government’s Community Relations Small Grants Program.
