We Can Make a Difference!
Most of use love nature, but on our own it’s hard to feel like we’re making a difference. Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

From its early development back in 1992, Mawson Lakes has been at the forefront of environmental care and has pioneered a host of innovations and initiatives. These moves have not only won international acclaim, they have empowered the community to make and difference. And that, of course, is the ultimate goal.

Recycled Water System
All homes and businesses in Mawson Lakes are connected to a recycled water system separate to the normal drinking water supply. Treated storm water and wastewater is pumped to properties via a dedicated pipe network for watering gardens and parks, washing cars and toilet flushing.
The system reduced usage of mains water in Mawson Lakes by 50% of the Adelaide average and the community is estimated to save around 800 mega litres of water per year!
Further information for Mawson Lakes residents can be found on SA Water’s website:

Water systems
Like the natural eco-system, water resources at Mawson Lakes are designed to be self-reliant. There are specially planted wetlands, an underground aquifer, a fish stock release programme and aquatic plantings are all instrumental in maintaining a water quality standard that is the envy of communities nation wide.

Storm water run-off treatment
At Mawson Lakes, storm water run-off is treated via natural wetlands, stored in underground aquifers and then re-used to fill lakes and water parklands.
Water in Shoalhaven Lake and The Bridges Lake is totally sourced from roof water run-off, storm water and groundwater from the Mobara Park region.

Respect for trees
As “the lungs” of our planet, trees and plants are essential to clean air. Wherever possible, street networks and developments are planned around existing and preserved trees, whilst an additional 800,000 plantings of mainly native trees, plants and shrubs will be completed by 2010.

Sustainable landscapes
It is no accident that the open spaces of Mawson Lakes are lush and green, yet still remain sustainable and in harmony with the natural environment. The Sustainable Landscapes Project adopted at Mawson Lakes demonstrates and promotes appropriate garden design, plant selection, efficient water use and sustainable horticultural practices. The Sustainable Landscapes Project is a partnership between Delfin Lend Lease, Land Management Corporation, The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Resources Management Board.

Recycled construction materials
Existing concrete, bitumen and road pavements are recycled for new roads and subdivision construction within Mawson Lakes reducing the need to extract all road materials from quarries. Recycled mulch is used in parks and gardens while other recycled materials can also end up in the form of tree stakes or landscaping edging!

Waste management guidelines
Mawson Lakes has led the way in large-scale promotion of building site recycling. Guidelines have been put in place at Mawson Lakes to limit builders’ rubbish which has resulted in a 50% reduction in the landfill waste originating from building sites within the development. 93% of builders’ waste was recycled during the construction of the Mawson Lakes Town Centre.

Water and Energy Efficiency Requirement scoresheet
At Mawson Lakes homebuilders are required to complete a Water and Energy Efficiency Score Sheet for every home they build to ensure minimum energy efficiency standards are met. This innovative Score Sheet allows home owners to play an active role in designing a comfortable home that reduces environmental impact and saves money.

Solar Hot Water systems mandated
The use of solar hot water systems is mandatory for all new homes built in Mawson Lakes. Harnessing natural solar energy for water heating was mandated in July 2003.

Solar and Photovoltaic Lighting systems
Innovative solar lighting has been adopted at Mawson Lakes. Already 28 solar lights have been installed around Sir Douglas Mawson Lake - reducing electricity use by 4,000kWh each year. Photovoltaic systems create electricity when light falls on a metal surface- being completely self-contained means they don’t require mains power. Photovoltaic systems are used in The Promenade town centre and residents and businesses alike are encouraged to install photovoltaic lighting - reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

Solar Packages
Mawson Lakes is part of the Solar Cities program which encourages the inclusion of photovoltaic systems for residential dwellings. The program provides for generous government rebates if a photovoltaic system is installed.
