Mawson Lakes cuts water consumption by 50%

Mawson Lakes residents and businesses have cut their water consumption in half saving 1,200 megalitres following the implementation of a state-of-the-art recycled water system 18 months ago.

This equates to 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Mawson Lakes was Australia’s first masterplanned residential community to connect every home, commercial building and school with recycled water.

Mawson Lakes Project Manager Chris Menz said he was proud to offer Mawson Lakes residents and businesses the opportunity to conserve such a precious resource.

“The River Murray provides up to 90% of Adelaide's water needs in drought years. So as the River Murray continues to be affected by the worst drought in recorded history, we’re doing our part to help ease pressure on South Australia’s water resources,” he said.

“Our recycled water system not only cuts the use of drinking water at Mawson Lakes by 50% each year, but the price of recycled water is 25% less than the price of mains water for use above 125 kilolitres per annum.”

Mr Menz said Mawson Lakes’ environmentally-friendly initiatives had even increased consumer demand for land at Mawson Lakes.

“As Adelaide’s drought crisis threatens to push water restrictions to level 4, it’s great that we can offer homebuyers the opportunity to invest in a community that takes the environment very seriously,” he said.

“With a state-of-the-art recycled water system connecting every home, commercial building and school in Mawson Lakes, residents and businesses in the community are only confined to level one water restrictions.”

The $16 million Recycled Water System at Mawson Lakes is the result of a partnership between the South Australian Government’s Land Management Corporation and SA Water, Delfin Lend Lease and the City of Salisbury

Mawson Lakes is being developed by Delfin Lend Lease and Land Management Corporation, and will eventually house approximately 10,000 people in 4,000 homes with 6,000 workers and 6,000 students.

Delfin Lend Lease is Australia’s leading developer of masterplanned communities with 16 trading projects across the country.
