Mawson Lakes peddles the map to active living

In a bid to help its residents lead a more active and healthy lifestyle and discover more about their community, Mawson Lakes has unveiled its new Hike and Bike Trail Map which details the 26 kilometres of tracks which weave their way throughout the community.

Available at the Mawson Lakes Sales and Information Centre, the Mawson Lakes Hike and Bike Trail Map has been designed for families, fitness enthusiasts, teenagers, young children, workers, students and retirees.

Mawson Lake’s 26km hike and bike network links in with Dry Creek and the numerous reserves around the community. The trails also link with the wider BikeDirect Network, so that people can not only travel within Mawson Lakes, but also to and from the wider community.

The map is a result of extensive collaboration between Delfin Lend Lease, the South Australian Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure and UniSA. The development and production of this map was made possible through funding from the Department of Transport Energy and Infrastructure and Delfin Lend Lease.

UniSA students played a key role in the development of the map, presenting a number of options. The final map also received a prize at the Spatial Sciences Institute’s Biennial International Conference held in Adelaide during September.

Mawson Lakes Project Director Vince Rigter said the hike and bike trails throughout Mawson Lakes provided a clean, safe and fun way to commute.

“We’re encouraging our residents to leave their cars at home and use the trails to move around the community – which will not only help the environment but also their own fitness,” he said.

“Mawson Lakes is full of historical reminders of our ancestors, and what better way to learn about the area’s history then by exploring them on the hike and bike trails. The area was traditionally occupied by the Kaurna people, and following European settlement it consisted of stockyards and paddocks for almost a century.

“Explore the grounds of the historic 1880s homestead residence of one of South Australia’s largest pastoralists, meander through the tranquil wetlands, or explore the parks where the Kaurna people used to cook.

“Even the bluestone surrounding the northern side of the lake near the Promenade has historical significance. The stone came from the old Flemington Markets in Melbourne where it was originally used as ballast in the early sailing ships that came from England to Australia.”

Residents can also use the trails to access retail, recreation and community facilities, including the Town Centre, Mawson Centre, schools and the university.

Mawson Lakes is being developed by Delfin Lend Lease and Land Management Corporation, and will eventually house approximately 10,000 people in 4,000 homes with 7,500 workers and 7,000 students.

Delfin Lend Lease is Australia’s leading developer of masterplanned communities with 25 projects in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and the Northern Territory.
